As the title suggests, the author seeks to trace and examine the very beginnings of the phenomenon that became known as witchcraft. Like Murray he sees it as the offspring of an ancient fertility cult, but narrows his focus, even speculating as to the origin of the 'language of the witches.' Spine ends a bit bruised, top edge a bit darkened, else a tight, bright and unmarked near Fine copy in VG dust jacket (Dust jacket spine darkened and lightly foxed with some light chipping at ends, all edges and points are a bit chafed and rubbed.
