The first American edition of this important work in which Murray explored her thesis that witchcraft is the survival of an ancient Pagan horned god cult. This first US edition was made up from the sheets of the British edition and typically on such copies the words "copyright 1952 - Alice Margaret Murray" on the verso of the title page were covered with a slip of paper, presumably to meet different US copyright obligations. In this instance the slip has been removed, causing a slight abrasion to the surface of the page. Spine ends and corners lightly bruised, page edges a little darkened, endpapers unevenly browned, pages very lightly toned but unmarked - overall a tight, bright VG+ copy (no dust jacket.).
