Demon Possession and Allied Themes. Being an Inductive Study of Phenomena of Our Times.

Chicago - New York - Toronto: Fleming H. Revell Company, ND (Circa 1900). Seventh Edition with Corrections and Supplement. Hardcover. Octavo. x + 518pp. Original navy cloth with gilt titling to spine, blind publisher's device to upper board. Index, supplement. The Seventh edition of this work includes the "Supplement to Second edition" at rear. An unusual account of "certain strange psychical phenomena" (demonic possession, etc.) observed by the author, a Christian missionary in the interior districts of the Shantung Province of China in the late nineteenth century. The first 90 or so pages are largely devoted to the author's experiences in China, after that he takes a broader view of the subject examining reports of similar occurences elsewhere with chapters such "Demon Possession in India, Japan and Other Lands," "Demon Possession Christian Countries," etc. before looking at possible explanations and offering a "Sketch of Historical Demonism" and chapters on "Spiritualism" and "The Facts and Literature of the Occult" etc. etc. The book was first published in Chicago in 1894, with a second corrected edition, including a new 35pp. "Supplement to Second edition" comprising reviews, comments etc. at the rear issued in 1896. Just a bit of light wear to corners and spine ends, page edges a bit darkened and lightly foxed, owners name in pencil on front blank, a minor amount of light scattered pencil lines outside text (easily erased) - else a tight, clean VG copy (no dust jacket). Scarce in early editions. Item #64535
