Volume 4 of 6 in the series "Egyptian Religious Texts and Representations"- but complete in itself. "The Litany of Re (Ra)" is generally described as one of the most important religious texts of the New Kingdom period of Ancient Egypt. It is fundamentally a funerary text for pharaohs, nobles, and priests, who it guides from their transition in death to Osiris, to their rebirth as Re (Ra). "The present work contains the translation of the Litany text, restored on the basis of the version on the shroud of Thutmosis III (published for the first time) and those on the walls of royal tombs; translations and descriptions of papyri that also contain the names of Re; and a theological commentary. The illustrations include 82 offest plates, of which 21 show the Litany on the shroud of Thutmosis III and on the tomb walls; 61 reproduce eight complete papyri." From the editorial note on the series: "Egyptian Religious Texts and Representations comprises a series of publications on Egyptian religion which include the complete photographic recording of hitherto unpublished royal tombs, important mythological papyri, and miscellaneous cosmological texts and symbolical representations. The series includes, where possible, the full translation of texts." A few light marks to page edges else a tight, clean near Fine copy in VG dust jacket.
