Moonchild; A Prologue

London: Mandrake, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 336pp. Original dark green cloth with gilt titles to spine. The first edition of Crowley's famous second novel, which tells the tale of a young woman caught up in a battle between two magicians, one of whom seeks to use her body as the vessel for the 'birth' in human form of a non-human entity: the "Moonchild" of the title. There is a generic bookplate on the front-pastedown with the ownership signature "John Ogdon" on it, which according to a previous owner is that of the English pianist and composer John Andrew Howard Ogdon (1937 - 1989). The spine ends and corners are lightly bumped, endpapers unevenly toned, page edges browned, but it is still an uncommonly clean, bright and fresh VG+ copy, in a nice, original (albeit restored) example of the famous Beresford Egan dust jacket. The dust jacket has been very skillfully restored; there is a largish ( 1.5 inch high x 4 inch) repair to the bottom of the spine and inner edge of the front panel where the artwork has been carefully reapplied and retouched. A similar but much smaller repair has been made to the top of the spine, as well as some minor reinforcements. Importantly these repairs have been so well done that they are virtually invisible when the jacket is viewed on the book, so outwardly the jacket appears near-fine, with the restoration only really apparent when the jacket is removed and viewed from the rear. Both book and jacket uncommon in such nice condition. Item #64716
