A popular overview of the subject, that tries to present it in a dispassionate and serious fashion. Chapters on: The World of the Black Magician, Names and Numbers, The Cabala and the Names of Power, The Stone and the Elixir, Astrology, Ritual Magic, The Worship of the Devil, Appendix 1: The Grimoires, Appendix 2: The 'Hebrew' System in Numerology. Richard Cavendish (b. 1930), is an Oxford-educated author who has written numerous accessible but reliable books on different aspects of the occult and was editor of the "Man Myth and Magic" series. Cloth lightly rubbed overall with some light spotting, corners and spine ends lightly bumped and chafed, front blank endpaper speckled (paint?), pages toned and with a few spots from uses and handling - but unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG copy in VG dust jacket (Dust jacket a little rubbed overall, a bit chafed at edges and folds, a few tiny chips, creases & tears, rear panel darkened, not clipped.
