The Equinox, Vol. I No V [ Proof Copy ]; The Official Organ of the A.'. A.'.; The Review of Scientific Illuminism

London: Printed for Aleister Crowley, Office of The Equinox, March 1911. First Edition, Proof Copy. Hardcover. Small quarto. pp. (x) + 158 + (ii) + 176 + (xii adverts). Recent half leather with complimentary papered boards, raised bands and gilt lettered leather title label to spine, fresh endpapers. Apparently a Proof copy of No. V. of the First "Volume" Crowley's famous "Equinox" series. Unlike the "regular" versions the pages of this proof are untrimmed, so that it is actually somewhat larger than the published version. It was acquired by the penultimate owner some 30 years ago, and at the time was unbound - he commissioned the attractive half-leather binding to protect it. Oddly both the rectos of the title and contents pages are on cut down sheets, and have been pasted over advertisements leaves or blanks at the front. Also the plate of "The Alphabet of Daggers" which usually faces page 47 has been cut down and pasted onto the blank, facing the Editorial page. The contents of this volume include: Liber HHH, The Blind Prophet, The Temple Of Solomon The King (Continued), The Vixen, The Pilgrim, My Crapulous Contemporaries, No. IV. - Wisdom While You Waite, as well as The Vampire by Ethel Archer, The Training Of The Mind by Ananda Metteya (Alan Bennett) & A Nocturne by Victor B. Neuburg. Special Supplement: Liber CCCCXVIII (XXX Aerum) [the first publication of Liber 418, "The Vision and the Voice."] The last gathering of pages (mostly advertisements and reviews) is bound out of sequence, but complete. The binding itself is handsome and unworn save for a couple of small spots on the rear board. Small binder's label on front pastedown, paper lightly browned, a few tiny tears to page edges, otherwise a lovely clean VG copy. Unusual. Item #64743
