The Sea Priestess.

London: Privately Published, 1938. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 316pp (+ 2 pp adverts). Light blue cloth with gilt titling to spine. The scarce First edition of the novel that is generally regarded - including by the author herself - as Dion Fortune's best and most important work of fiction. Interestingly Fortune chose to self-publish this novel, and it has "Published by the Author" and the Fraternity of the Inner Light's Queensborough Terrace address on the title page, and her initials (D.F.) at the place usually reserved for the publisher's imprint at the bottom of the spine. From the collection of Clive Harper with his discrete book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well-known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Cloth a bit faded at extreme edges, spine slightly canted and a little darkened, spine ends and corners lightly bruised and rubbed. Page edges a little browned, endpapers unevenly toned with small, contemporary London bookseller's label in bottom margin of front blank. Overall a solid, clean VG copy in near-VG dust jacket. (Dust jacket darkened - more so at spine, spine ends and corners chafed and chipped, one inch tear at upper front spine fold: reinforced with acid free tissue tape on the reverse. Price clipped. Now in removable mylar protective cover). Item #64797
