The Book of Tokens. 22 meditations on the Ageless Wisdom.
Washington DC: TAROTA, 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. 200pp. Original textured orange faux leather over flexible covers, black title within black border on front cover, b&w tree of life frontispiece and striking b/w illustrations of the 22 tarot trumps . An anonymously written series of meditations upon the occult meaning of the twenty-two Hebrew letters and their relationship with the tarot. The book is commonly described as a "received text" - although the method of its "reception" is unclear - which was worked up for publication by Paul Foster Case (1884 – 1954 ) the American occultist now known for his work with the Golden Dawn influenced Builders of the Adytum ( B.O.T.A) and Michael Whitty, Cancellarius for the Thoth-Hermes Lodge of the Alpha et Omega. Covers a bit darkened, light chafing to spine ends and corners, page edges a bit thumbed, endpapers unevenly browned, light abrasion to front pastedown (from removal of a bookplate?), gift message, notes and owner's names on front blank, publisher's label on front pastedown. The very thin onion-skin ("bible-type") paper on which the volume is printed is lightly creased with a few tiny edge tears and folded corners. Neatly taped closed tear to penultimate blank. Has clearly been read, but still a tight, clean VG+ copy of this very scarce first edition. Item #64897
