A descriptive catalogue of alchemical manuscripts (except Oriental) in the United States and Canada which was prepared by the American Council of Learned Societies in order to fill what they felt was a lack in available reference material. The volume is a facsimile reprint of that originally published in Bruges in 1939 as the sixth volume of the "Osiris" series of learned studies. The present work, confined to Latin and the vernacular languages, describes 79 alchemical manuscripts from 31 different libraries and institutions. The work commences with a portrait of and a bibliography of the works of Joseph Bidez (1894-1938), followed by extensive descriptions of the 79 manuscripts, and concluding with an 32 page "Table of Alchemical Symbols", a General Index, an Index of Titles and Incipits and an Alphabetical list of Memoirs in Osiris Volumes I to VII.
