Boston / New York: Bela Marsh / Partridge and Brittan, 1856. Second Edition. Hardcover. Small octavo. 36pp. This edition originally issued in printed paper wrappers, this copy rebound in modern flexible green cloth with printed paper title label on upper cover (wrappers NOT bound in). Alonzo E. Newton (1821-1889) was an early spiritualist and editor and publisher of the journal, "New-England Spiritualist." He, and his wife, Sarah J. Newton, were also members of the Edwards Congregational Church, and in December 1853, were called to answer charges levelled by a Committee of the Church that that in adopting certain Spiritualist beliefs they had "embraced doctrines which are contrary to those set forth in our Articles of Faith." This booklet traces the history of the exchange, including charges levelled, their rebuttal by the Newtons, etc., that ultimately ended with the Church withdrawing "its watch and care from them" - effectively excommunicating them in all but word. First published in 1854. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, although not marked as such. Binding fresh and clean, pages toned with moderate foxing and browning throughout. Overall a tight unmarked VG copy. Scarce. Item #64973
