The editor, Christine Hartley, better known as Christine Campbell Thomson (1897–1985) was an author, anthologist and literary agent. "Nightmare by Daylight" was the eleventh and final volume of the British "Not at Night" series of horror anthologies published by Selwyn and Blount in the 1920s and 1930s. "Nightmare by Daylight" comprises fifteen stories: Charles Cullum - "Scarred Mirror"; Barrett Willoughby - "One Alaskan Night"; David H. Keller - "The Dead Woman"; "Oscar Cook - "The Crimson Head-Dress"; Gordon Chesson - "Little Red Shoes"; Zayu Konstanz - "The Yellow Paw"; Dion Fortune - "The Flute Of Seven Stops"; Hester Holland - "The Scream"; Nicholas Stafford - "Mirabel Houston"; Walter Rose - "The Horror Of the Cavern"; Jessie D. Kerruish - "The Gold Of Hermodike"; E.M.P. Inglefield - "The Cossacks"; R. Dawson - "Grannie"; Flavia Richardson (pseudonym of Christine Campbell Thomson) - "Empty Stockings"; and Oswell Blakeston - The Crack." Thomson was an occultist and long-term friend of Dion Fortune, whose short story "The Flute of Seven Stops" she included in "Nightmare by Daylight". Thomson was also a member of the Society of the Inner Light and wrote two non-fiction occult titles, "The Western Mystery Tradition" (1968) and "A Case For Reincarnation" (1972) as Christine Hartley, using her the surname of her second husband, whom she had married in 1945. Spine somewhat concave, a little bruising and chafing to spine ends and corners, cloth shows light signs of handling. Endpaper hinges cracked but holding firm, moderate pale foxing throughout, heaviest at first and last few leaves. An obviously used, but solid G+ copy in a fine FACSIMILE dust jacket (dust jacket in removable protective mylar sleeve). Item #65080
