Item #65098 The Scented Garden of Abdullah the Satirist of Shiraz [ The Bagh-i-Muattar ]. Aleister CROWLEY, signed Martin P. Starr.

The Scented Garden of Abdullah the Satirist of Shiraz [ The Bagh-i-Muattar ].

Chicago / York Beach: The Teitan Press, 1991 / 2011. Facsimile Edition / Edition Deluxe. Hardcover. Large Octavo. 138 (+ii) pp. Full white limp vellum with gilt titling to spine, and green silk ties. Top edge gilt. This specially-bound deluxe issue was limited to twenty-one copies, the first eleven copies of which were released, un-numbered, shortly after the publication of the "standard" Teitan Press edition in 1991. The remaining ten copies, numbered I - X and SIGNED by the editor Martin P. Starr, were completed at the end of 2011 to mark the twentieth anniversary of this edition. This is copy number II (two) of those ten copies. Part homo-erotic parody, part mystical text, "The Scented Garden of Abdullah the Satirist of Shiraz" (also known as "The Bagh-i-Muattar"), first published in 1910, is one of Crowley's scarcest works. The vellum binding on this deluxe issue reflects that which Crowley commissioned from master binders Zaehnsdorf in 1910 of this own copy of the book. From the collection of Clive Harper with his discrete book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well-known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. The boards tend to splay open a little when not tied, as is almost inevitable with limp vellum (this is of course why the bindings have ties). Fine condition. Item #65098
