Black cloth with gilt titling on gilt bordered red panel on spine, color and b&w plates & illustrations, appendices, indexes. The first edition of Rene de Nebesky-Wojkowitz's extraordinary study which remains the major work on Tibetan folk belief and protective deities. While the book is centered around the "protector deities" of Tibet, de Nebesky-Wojkowitz cast his net much broader, and the book became - and remains - one of the major sources for the study of the popular or folk elements of Tibet religious practice (Buddhist, Bon and autochthonous). Top edge darkened and dusty, endpapers unevenly browned, pages lightly toned - else a lovely bright and unmarked VG+ copy in VG+ dust jacket. (Dust jacket a bit rubbed at edges with some light chipping and a couple of short tears - closed on the rear with archival tissue tape. Reverse side browned, not clipped.
