Item #65554 The Drug. Aleister CROWLEY.

The Drug.

Cambridge, UK: Privately Printed, 1996. First Edition Proof Copy. Softcover booklet. 8 1/4 x 6 inch. (12pp) Stapled in thin grey card covers with printed paper title label on upper cover. An early trial copy of Nicholas Bishop-Culpeper's publication of the Crowley short story "The Drug". The pages are xeroxed and glued back-to-back so as to be in proper order. This copy has "1st Proof" written in Culpeper's hand on the limitation page. The printied limitation statement for the planned reads "Edition limited to 93 copies, this is marked..." under which he has writtenthe number "7". It is most unlikely that Nicholas made seven examples of this "1st proof" especially as later proofs exist, so we have no idea why it is there. From the library of the publisher, Crowley collector Nicholas Bishop-Culpeper with his book label tipped in at the rear. The first separate publication of a short story by Crowley that first appeared in The Idler (magazine), in 1909. This copy being a proof is somewhat different in appearance to the final version: covers, title label and text pages are all on slightly different stock in weight, texture and color. Fine condition.
