The History and Practice of Magic ( Two Volumes in One ).

New York: The Citadel Press, ND [ circa 1963 ]. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Large Octavo. xxx + 622pp. Original red cloth with black titling, list of reference books, b&w diagrams. The first one volume edition of this fully revised, modern English translation, of a work originally published in France in 1870. The original edition quickly became considered as a standard reference work, and was amongst those favourably cited by Mme. Blavatsky in her 'Secret Doctrine.' This new English edition was put together with the assistance of many of the leading British occultists of the time (two of whom had been personal friends of Aleister Crowley) and includes revisions and supplementary articles by Mir Bashir, Margery Lawrence, and Julian Shaw and emendations and notes by Charles R. Cammell, Lewis Spence, Gerald Yorke, and Edward Whybrow. Spine ends and corners lightly bruised and chafed, light 2 inch crease to cloth at upper spine, a few minor faults to cloth, page edges and endpapers a bit darkened and lightly thumbed, pages lightly toned. Still, overall a nice clean VG+ copy in VG dust jacket (Dust jacket a bit chafed and lightly chipped at all edges and extremities, a few larger chips and short tears at spine ends and folds, not clipped. Now in protective mylar cover.). Item #65995
