The Haunted and the Haunters.

London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., 1925. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Octavo. viii + 166pp. Original red cloth with black titling to spine and front board. B/w frontis. portrait. B/w plates & illustrations. A pleasant edition of Bulwer Lytton's "The Haunted and the Haunters," a work thought to be based in part on the famously haunted Willington mill-house. It is not only one of best-known Victorian haunted house stories, but is said to have been the first "modern" example of such a story, set in a city and at the (then) present time. This edition includes the story itself, plus a biographical piece, "Lytton the Mystic", and a lengthy study "Ghosts at Willington" by Harold Armitage. Lytton is of course well known for his many novels, including "Zanoni," "The Coming Race," etc. etc. From the library of Gerald Yorke (1901-1983) with his posthumous bookplate on the front pastedown. In later life Yorke played a crucial role in preserving Crowley's literary legacy as well as in the publication of works on the occult and Eastern religions, editing and commissioning works for a number of British publishers from the 1950s through 1970s. A little leaned, spine ends rubbed, spine darkened, some flecking (white spots) to back cover, page-edges lightly darkened, internally tight and clean. A better than VG copy (no dust jacket).
