London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. / Aleister Crowley , Equinox Offices / Wieland & Co, 1909 - 1913. First Edition - 'Standard Issue'. Hardcovers. 10 Volumes. Small quartos, (9 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches). First Edition "Standard Issue." A complete set of the ten numbers which make up the first series (or "volume") of "The Equinox," published biannually between 1909 & 1913. As is well-known, Crowley was the editor and principal author of most of the volumes of "The Equinox," which contained a variety of poetry, fiction, and reviews - generally with esoteric themes - alongside a number of articles of occult instruction. It is widely acknowledged as one of the landmarks of occult literature, and comprises ten huge volumes - over 4000 pages – including numerous color and black and white illustrations, tables etc. This set is the "Standard" issue, which comprised an edition of 1000 copies for the early numbers, and less (probably 500) for the later, bound in light linen spines with paper-covered boards and paper title-labels on the spines. The thin fabric used for the spines was notoriously fragile, and is often damaged or missing altogether. This is a remarkably good set: the spines of eight volumes are very sturdy originals, whilst the remaining two of the volumes have been expertly rebacked in a fabric matching that of the original (this is so well done that we had to look closely to tell that the volumes had in fact been rebacked, and weren't just in fine condition). Each of the rebacked volumes has been supplied with a "distressed" facsimile title label, as has one of the volumes with the original spine. The paper-covered boards show the inevitable slight grubbiness and a little chipping. All volumes have been carefully collated to ensure that all the plates called for are present (absentee plates are common problem in "Equinox" volumes). A few typical signs of modest age, but over all the volumes would rate as VG +, and are unusual thus. A full condition report is available on request. A large heavy set that will require some additional shipping and insurance in addition to the amount automatically listed. The exact amount extra will depend on the destination and the method used - we will calculate it and contact you once you've placed your order, or you can enquire beforehand. Item #66098
