[ 1929 ]. The letter is written on the recto only of a single sheet of thick, high quality, 10 x 8 inch cream, deckled-edged note-paper with the watermark "Van Gelder." It has the typed address "55 Avenue de Suffren / Paris, vii" at the head of the page and is dated January 6th, 1929. It begins and ends with the full Thelemic greetings, after which Crowley closes with "Yours fraternally." Unusually Crowley has SIGNED the letter with his magical name "To Mega Therion [in Greek] 666" rather than his "civvy" name or the simple "666." The letter is addressed to Cora Eaton (1872-1942), Karl Germer's second wife, who played a major role in financing Crowley’s publishing projects at the time. Its content is largely personal, a certain amount is about Germer, and Crowley seems to be hinting strongly that it would be a good thing for Cora to push a certain "Maria" out of Karl Germer's orbit. Stapled to the letter is a 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inch trial/sample sheet from "Magick in Theory in Practice," a work which was about to go to press at the time that the letter was written (and which Cora had helped finance). The text starts with a paragraph beginning 'The MASTER THERION defines MAGICK as "The Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with will"' which glosses but does not exactly match any passage in the published text, below which are chapter headings and synopses of the first eight chapters as they would appear on the "Contents" page of the published work.
An interesting and important piece. Crowley use of his "Magickal" signature ("To Mega Therion 666" being the motto / name that he took when he assumed the grade of Magus) is quite uncommon, and the attached sheet is a unique pre-publication memento of the work that is largely regarded as Crowley's magnum opus. Small rusty paper-clip mark to the top of both pages and two light folds, otherwise VG+ condition. Item #66207
