B&w frontisportrait; b&w and two-toned illustrations and 15 color plates of sand-paintings. This first edition was limited to one thousand copies (not numbered) and is the first volume in a series entitled "Navajo Religion series". In it Mary Wheelwright meticulously records Navajo religion and related ceremonial practices over a period of 17 years during which she had the opportunity to receive them directly from Hasteen Klah (1867– 1937) [ aka Hosteen Klah, Hastiin Tl'a ], a Navajo artist and medicine man who as a traditional "nádleehi" person, who was also a ceremonial singer and master weaver. Light rubbing to edges, small discoloured patch at lower edge of upper board, page edges a bit darkened, owner's name on front endpaper,- else a tight clean VG+ copy in VG dust jacket. (Dust jacket is lightly worn and darkened, a few faint marks, some light chipping and creasing to edges. Now protected by mylar cover). Item #66219
