Cambridge, England: The Cambridge University Press, 1896. First edition Thus. Hardcover. Octavo. 84pp. Dark navy cloth, gilt title to spine, blind rules to front cover. Author, James Rendel Harris (1852 – 1941) was an English biblical scholar and curator of manuscripts, who was instrumental in bringing back to light many Syriac scriptures and other early documents, many of which he acquired during extensive travels in the Middle East. This volume comprises two essays: "Hermas In Arcadia," and "On the Angeology Of Hermas" that deal with the text and interpretation of the "Shepherd of Hermas", a second century Christian literary work that was considered canonical scripture by some of the early Church fathers such as Irenaeus. The first essay was originally published in the June 1887 Journal of the Society for Biblical Literature and Exegesis, the second essay in the Circulars of the John Hopkins University for April 1884. To these the author has added three other essays: "Prester John's Library," "Presbyter Gaius And The Fourth Gospel", and "Euthalius & Eusebius." Cloth a bit rubbed overall, spine faded, spine ends and corners lightly bumped and chafed, page edges and endpapers unevenly darkened, bookplate on front pastedown. Pages toned but fresh and unmarked. Overall a clean, tight, VG+ copy (no dust jacket). Item #66222
