Greek Horoscopes; Memoirs of the American Philosophical Society held at Philadelphia for Promoting Useful Knowledge, Volume 48

Philadelphia, PA: American Philosophical Society, 1959. First Edition. Hardcover. Quarto. xii + 232 pp. Original blue cloth with gilt title etc. to front cover and spine, b&w illustrations. Author, Dr. Neugebauer, then a professor of the history of Mathematics at Brown University, is perhaps best known for his massive "Egyptian Astronomical Texts". In this volume Dr. Neugebauer, with the assistance of Brown University Library Director Dr. Van Hoesen, offers a very detailed study of the horoscope in ancient Greece, from the 2nd Century BC to the beginning of Islam. From the publisher: "Beginning with the second century B.C. astrology penetrated in ever increasing degree the Hellenistic and Roman world. The present publication is an attempt to follow one particular component in its ramifications: the Greek horoscopes, from the first century B.C. to beginning of Islam. All available sources have been utilized: monuments, papyri, ostraca, and astrological treatises from the Roman Imperial period to Byzantine times. For the majority of the papyri the Greek text is given and for all horoscopes English translations with commentaries. The final chapters discuss the authors of the astrological treatises and the astronomical and historical implications arising from the study of the whole material. Indices for the technical terminology of Greek astrology are added." Light bruising to corners and spine ends, a little rubbing to edges and points, light toning to pages, light vertical crease to first few leaves including title page - else a tight, bright VG+ copy in VG+ dust jacket. (Dust jacket is lightly rubbed at edges, lightly chafed and chipped at spine ends and corners, not clipped. Now in mylar cover.) Oversized book may require additional shipping. Item #66228
