Original black cloth with gilt lettering to spine, blind borders on upper board, b&w frontis with tissue guard, b&w plates and in-text illustrations. Comprises two papers read by authors Westropp and Wakefield before the Anthropological Society of London on 5 April, 1870, which discussed artifacts and religious practices connected to various literal and allegorical phallic representations. The illustrations found in this second edition were not present in the first edition, thus making this the better edition. Bumping and chafing to spine ends and corners, a few tiny tears to spine ends, cloth a bit rubbed overall with heavy fading to upper portion of rear board, page edges darkened, bookplate on front pastedown, endpapers unevenly darkened, lightly chipped & creased. First leaf of preface is present but bound in upside down, pages toned - but unmarked. Overall a tight, internally clean near VG copy. Item #66238
