Indo-Aryan Deities and Worship, as Contained in the Rig-Veda.

Louisville: The Standard Printing Co., 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Small quarto. xiv + 650. Modern (late twentieth century) cloth with gilt lettering to spine. B&w illustrations, printed on "bible paper", index. Edition limited to 800 numbered copies: "The original manuscript of his Indo-Aryan Deities and Worship in three volumes, written with quill pens fashioned by himself, is a prized possession of the Supreme Council. As a tribute to his memory and to add to the world's store of knowledge, the Supreme Council ordered that one edition of this manuscript be printed..... limited to eight hundred copies." study by American author, jurist and Freemason Albert Pike (1809 – 1891) was an American author, who is best known for his "Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry." The limitation/presentation page indicates that Pike learned Sanskrit in his later years and compiled translations such as this one in his later years, although Pike himself acknowledges that it is more of an interpretation rather than a translation, with him applying his vast knowledge of other religious and mystical systems to the Vedas in an attempt to bring out the true spirituals meaning that is buried in myth and allegory. This copy was presented to the Free Public Library of Neward New Jersey as stated on the limitation page. There are small library ink stamps on the title page, first Preface page and final index page (that latter has a small "cancelled" stamp over it). Binding appears recent and is thus near "new" in appearance. First and last few leaves are a bit wrinkled and have several closed tears and chips - no loss of text. A few other short tears there, otherwise internally bright and unmarked. Overall a tight, clean, ex-lib but still VG copy of this scarce first edition. Item #66256
