Published posthumously following the death of author Whitlock, this is his master work written over many years as Curator of the Morgan Gem Collection and the Drummond Jade Collection of New York's American Museum of Natural History. The publisher observes that the author explains "the many meanings of the shapes and symbols ...the Taoist symbols found on carved jade are interpreted and the influence of Buddhist symbolism upon jade carving is revealed. ...many illustrations amplify and illuminate the text .. with every piece explained - from the most ancient burial jades to th emore ornate modern carvings from the collections of Chinese emperors and empresses."
