The first edition of this translation of the ancient Egyptian ritual known as "The Book of the Opening of the Mouth," with commentary. The ritual, a part of the "Pyramid Texts" was undertaken during the preparation of the body for mummification, and comprised a series of actions and recitations designed to prepare it and sustain it in the journey to the afterlife. This volume was published as Volume XXV of the 'Books on Egypt and Chaldea' series by E. A. Wallis Budge, Keeper of the Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities in the British Museum and one of the great scholars of ancient Egyptian language, custom and belief. Very light shelfwear, spine darkened, corners and spine ends lightly bumped and chafed. Page edges a little darkened and pages toned, but most are still unopened thus a bright unmarked and unread VG+ copy (no dust jacket). Item #66448
