Paris: Le Bailly, Libraire, ND [ ca. 1890 ]. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Three books in one volume. Small octavo. Frontis (Dragon Rouge), 107pp; Frontis (L'Alchemiste), 108pp; and b&w frontis,108pp. Contemporary (?) green cloth with gilt titling to spine. Front wrapper bound in. French TEXT. The text is divided into three complete books - each with its own separate (albeit rather basic) title page. A most unusual compilation, presumably published to take advantage of the popularity of grimoires in the late nineteenth century. According to the title-page it comprises three works: "Le Grand Albert"; "Les Secrets Mystiques ... du Petit Albert"; and "Le Dragon Rouge." The text of "Le Grand Albert" is not any version what we would normally associate with that title, it seems to be a composite of that work, and various other works, including the "Grand Grimoire" and "Le Dragon Rouge." Similarly the "Petit Albert" is unlike any other version of the text we have seen, most of which are largely devoted to folk-magic. The text here begins with a section enumerating the different types of divination, with a brief description of each, which is followed by a section on the creation etc. of talismans. About half-way through the work, it turns to subjects more typical of the "Petit Albert", tips on agricultural efficiency, recipes, general advice, and folk-magic. The third volume, "Le Dragon Rouge", is not the grimoire of that name, but rather a late nineteenth century literary work, that clearly sought to capitalize on the notoriety of the grimoire of the same name. As far as can be seen it is a cautionary tale about the dangers of magic, into which sections of text from the original grimoire have been worked. It was originally published under the name de Robville, which according to a catalogue entry for the book in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, was probably a pseudonym of the French novelist and biographer Jules de Saint-Félix, (1806-1874) who also produced pot-boilers under the pseudonym Félix d'Amoreux. All in all a curious mixture. "La Grand et Véritable Science" is undated, but reviews / notices of copies with the exact same publication data start to appear in literary journals from 1890 onwards. From the collection of Clive Harper with his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Cloth lightly shelf worn, spine rubbed and unevenly faded (quite heavily) - gilt text a bit rubbed and faded, page edges darkened, pages toned with some uneven browning and creasing to edges. Still a solid and unmarked VG copy. Unusual and quite scarce. Item #66484
