Sacred Text of the "Society of Diana" Tuscany, Italy; Order of the Black Crescent

Salem MA: Acorn Products, 1998. First edition, Limited. Hardcover. Landscape quarto. xxii + 18pp. Clamp bound in textured black faux leather boards, with gilt text reading "O.B.C. Charter" on spine. B&w sigils and illustrations. Edition limited to 10 hand numbered and signed copies, this being copy no. 4. It is also has a lengthy INSCRIPTION by Van Etten to Clive Harper on the first blank page, and has, loosely inserted, a small printed design for an "Empress" tarot card, with a handwritten and signed greeting from co-compiler, Anne Blanchard on the otherwise blank verso. Van Etten has signed his inscription with both with his magical name and his own first name, as "O.H.O." (Outer Head of the Order) of the "O.B.C." ("Order of the Black Crescent" ) of Salem, Massachusetts, and dated it January 2nd, 2004. The volume presents a series of pictographs arranged, translated, and interpreted by the editors, which are said to be from the "Society of Diana", Tuscany, and to reflect various of their rites. Loosely inserted is a one-page print-out, apparently an unpublished Foreword to "The Sacred Text" by the occult and Masonic scholar Dr. R. A. Gilbert, dated October 1998. Gilbert seems as mystified by the work as we are, but does not appear to doubt its sincerity, or the potential power of the pictographs. From the collection of Clive Harper with his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Covers lightly warped, otherwise Fine condition. Obviously most uncommon. Item #66485
