The Etude. Presser's Musical Magazine, August 1916.

Philadelphia PA: Theo Presser Co. Publisher, 1916. First Edition. Softcover. Octavo. Magazine format. 14 x 11 inches. Eccentrically paginated (545-616pp), 70pp. Cream stapled wrappers lettered and illustrated in black on green panel. A single issue of this monthly magazine devoted to music. This issue includes a translation by Aleister Crowley of Paul Verlaine's poem "With Muted Strings", set to music by Tod B. Galloway (p. 589). Crowley's translation of Verlaine's poem had been published the previous year in the October 1915 issue of "Vanity Fair" but without the music. In addition to the collection of music-related essays, correspondence, musical scores & classifieds, the magazine also contains some interesting advertisements, including a stunningly racist one on the inside front cover. From the collection of Clive Harper with his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Light rubbing, chafing and creasing to covers, creasing and wrinkling to lower half of covers and most pages, a few closed tears at spine edges, pages a bit toned, unmarked. Overall about VG- condition. Most unusual. Item #66684
