Asheville, NC [ York Beach, Maine USA ]: 93 Publishing [ with Samuel Weiser Publishing ], 1994. First Edition, Deluxe limited. Hardcover. Large thick octavo. lxxxiv + 810pp. Hand-bound in half leather over papered boards with Egyptian motif, raised bands and gilt title and devices to spine, top edge gilt. Bound thus by Paul Sawyer in homage to the magnificent Sangorski & Sutcliffe design of the first edition "Book of Thoth". Crowley frontis-portrait and b&w illustrations, color plates. References, appendices, and indexes. A striking deluxe limited issue of the first complete single volume edition of "Liber ABA," published by arrangement between 93 Publishing and Samuel Weiser Publishing. There were three different limited issues produced: this is copy number 4 of the issue with a stated limitation of 136 copies, (though we are reliably informed that less than half that number were actually completed). This copy is warmly INSCRIBED & SIGNED to Clive Harper on the front free endpaper by the editor Hymenaeus Beta. As noted it is bound in half-leather with Egyptian patterned boards in tribute to the first edition of "The Book of Thoth" and is housed in the optional matching slip-case. There were two other special editions of "Liber ABA," one comprising 22 copies designated by Hebrew letter, hand-bound by Paul Sawyer and in a custom box, and one of only 7 copies designated by planetary symbol, bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf. The text is the first definitive edition of Crowley's masterwork "Book Four." It includes "Book Four" Parts I (Mysticism) and Two (Magick), Part III: "Magick in Theory and Practice," and - as Crowley had originally intended, Part IV, "The Book of the Law," with an Introduction and copious notes and Appendices etc. by Hymenaeus Beta. From the collection of Clive Harper with his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. The label can easily be removed without affecting the page, although it would be a shame not to preserve this record of the book's provenance. A lovely deluxe edition of what is arguably one of the most important Thelemic publications of the last two decades. About Fine condition, housed in the original matching near Fine slipcase.
