The History of Atlantis.

Philadelphia, PA: David McKay Company, ND [ circa 1927]. First US Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xviii + 238 pp. Red cloth with gilt titling to spine; blind rules to upper board; frontispiece; b&w illustrations. The author James Lewis Thomas Chalmers Spence (1874 - 1955) was a Scottish journalist, folklorist, and prolific author of books on the occult and mythology. He developed a strong interest in the fabled land of Atlantis, and wrote a number of books on the subject, following broadly the direction set for the Ignatius Donnelly. In this, his second work on the subject, he attempts to piece together the history, geography, customs and beliefs of Atlantis as preserved in a wide variety of sources and traditions. Very light general shelf wear, light bumps to upper corners, page edges darkened, owner's name in pen on front blank, pages toned but bright and unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG+ copy in VG+ dust jacket. (Colour illustrated dust jacket is a bit shelfworn overall, darkened at spine, lightly chipped and creased at edges and extremities, not clipped. Now in protective mylar cover.) Scarce in early editions, particularly so in dust jacket. Item #66757
