Large octavo. xiv + 274pp. Original navy cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine, gilt and blue device to upper board, top edge gilt, frontis w/ tissue guard. Warmly INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Nayán Louise Redfield on the title page (Redfield was the translator of various works of d'Olivet, as well as an important edition of "The Golden Verses of Pythagoras.") The first English language edition of this work that first appeared in French in 1811 under the title "Guerison de Rodolphe Grivel, sourd-muet de naissance, Notions sur Le Sens de l'Ouie". D'Olivet, orientalist and philosopher, claimed that the principles of all the sciences were to be found in a work called "The Cosmogony of Moses," which he translated and published in his "The Hebraic Tongue Restored." To prove his assertion he set up a course of treatments for a deaf-mute of fifteen based on the teachings it held. D'Olivet claimed that he restored the faculties of hearing and speech to the teenager, and describes the story of the cure and the method in this volume. Very light shelf wear, light bruising and rubbing to spine ends & points, top edge gilt a bit dulled, pages toned but clean and unmarked. Overall a tight, unmarked VG+ copy in a near VG example of the most uncommon dust jacket (Dust jacket is darkened at margins and spine, lightly rubbing and chipping to all edges and points, one inch chip at upper spine, not clipped.
