Michelet's work has attained the status of a minor classic of popular literature on the subject. About half the volume is devoted to a well-researched and scathing examination of the witch panic; Michelet also examines the religious intolerance of the Middle-Ages, the Inquisition and the Auto-de-Fe. The work was first published in French in 1862, the first US edition appeared in 1939. The Citadel Press were not consequent in identifying their printings, but if this is not a first edition thus, it is certainly one of their earlier reprints. Cloth lightly faded and rubbed, light bruising to extremities, page edges a bit darkened, internally clean and unmarked. A tight, VG+ copy in VG dust jacket (Dust jacket lightly rubbed overall, light chafing to edges, not clipped. Now in mylar cover). Item #66947
