Although much had been written on New England and other specific regional witch panics, this book is thought to be the first attempt, using documents and published sources, to piece together a record of witchcraft occurrences and panics across the USA. The author, Samuel Gardner Drake (1798 – 1875) was a New Hampshire-born historian and author, who also ran an antiquarian book shop, said to be the first in the United States.
