Item #66965 Satanism And Witchcraft. A Study in Medieval Superstition. Jules MICHELET, A R. Allison, G. Christopher Hudson.

Satanism And Witchcraft. A Study in Medieval Superstition.

New York: Walden Publications, 1939. First US Edition (?). Hardcover. Octavo. xviii+ 350pp. Original beige cloth, with black titling to spine and black demon illustration on upper board. B&w frontis and illustrations. Michelet's work has attained the status of a minor classic of popular literature on the subject. About half the volume is devoted to a well-researched and scathing examination of the witch panic; Michelet also examines the religious intolerance of the Middle-Ages, the Inquisition and the Auto-de-Fe. As far as we can determine the Walden Publications edition, which has the publication date 1939 on the title-page, preceded the first Citadel printing, which had a copyright date of 1939 but may well have been published later. There do not appear to have been any earlier US printings of English translations of the book. A well used copy. Cloth darkened and somewhat worn overall, bumps and chafing to extremities, page edges browned and thumbed, endpapers uneveny browned, owner's name on front blank, pages toned but clean and unmarked. Overall a solid and serviceable Good copy (no dust jacket). Item #66965
