Woodcut (?) frontispiece printed on red paper. GERMAN TEXT. By Heinrich Tränker (1880 - 1956) the German bookseller, publisher and occultist who founded the Pansophische Lodge in Berlin and was appointed X°-degree O.T.O. for Germany by Theodur Reuss. Tränker was involved in the esoteric publishing venture Pansophia with Karl Germer in the early 1920s and was clearly impressed with Aleister Crowley's teachings, a number of which were published in translation under the Pansophia imprint. He also invited Crowley to visit him at his house at Hohenleuben in Weida; which he did in 1925, and for a time embraced Crowley's teachings, although the two soon fell out in disputed circumstances. Although the present book is perhaps more Rosicrucian than Thelemic in overall outlook, it contains a number of explicitly Crowleyan references, including a rather interesting diagram with "Wille / Thelema / Liebe" ["Will, Thelema, Love"] as its center focus on p. 156. This first edition of the work includes a woodcut frontispiece and a fourteen page supplement at the rear, the first page of which is headed "Pansophischer Orient Nr. 1" which is followed by a translation into German of "The Message of the Master Therion" and several publisher's notices concerning the Collegium Pansophicum, the death of Rudolf Steiner, advertisements etc. The frontispiece and supplement were omitted from the second edition which is also in slightly smaller format. From the library of Edward Noel Fitzgerald (1908-1958), Frater Agape of the A.'. A.'., a IX degree member of the O.T.O., and friend and follower of Aleister Crowley, with whom he was in regular contact from the mid-1930s up until "the Beast's death" in 1947. FitzGerald was part of the small circle in Britain in the 1950s - including Frieda Lady Harris, Gerald Yorke, and Kenneth and Steffi Grant - who continued to take an interest in Crowley's work after his death. FitzGerald was also in contact with Karl Germer, who actively considered appointing him head of the O.T.O. in Britain, but this was precluded by FitzGerald's illness and untimely death. Much of FitzGerald's library and papers were acquired by Weiser Antiquarian Books in 2007, and this volume includes, tipped onto the front pastedown, a bookplate featuring FitzGerald's lamen seal that was especially produced by Weiser Antiquarian to identify works from the collection. More recently from the collection of Clive Harper with his discrete book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Boards rubbed and a bit darkened and somewhat worn at edges and corners, spine ends rubbed. Front endpaper hinge cracked, but the board itself, though a little wobbly, is still firmly attached. Page edges rubbed, paper lightly browned. Still, a sound and internally clean VG copy with interesting provenance (no dust jacket issued). Item #67047
