Heaven Lies Within Us.

New York, NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1939. First Edition - First Issue. Hardcover. Octavo. xvi + 326pp. Original red cloth with black title, etc. to spine, black device to upper cover, b&w frontispiece and illustrations, index. Theos Casimir Bernard (1908 – 1947) was an American scholar of Indic and Tibet religions, an accomplished practitioner of Yoga, and a pioneer of Indian and Tibetan studies in the United States. "Heaven Lies Within" is an exposition of Yoga (in particular Hatha Yoga), its practice and philosophy, set in the context of the author's travels and researches in India. In addition to his scholarship, Bernard had a fascinating life of travel and adventure, and was only the third American to visit Lhasa. The circumstances of his death are unknown, but he disappeared, presumed murdered, on his way to a Tibetan monastery in a remote area of the Indian Himalaya. First edition, first issue with "1939" on the title-page and "A" on the copyright page. Red cloth a bit darkened and with a hint of shelf-wear, with one small finger-nail sized lighter page (tea splash?) on rear board, corners and spin ends lightly bruised. Endpapers unevenly browned, bookplate on front pastedown, very light vertical crease down first few leaves, small chip from fore-edge margin of pp. vii/viii (careless opening), and both it and the preceding leaf have a tiny tear to the edge. Text pages otherwise bright and unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG+ copy of a scarce first edition (no dust jacket). Item #67221
