Boston, MA: Aleta B. Baker, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Small quarto. [x], 338pp. Original navy cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board. B&W illustrations, Frontis-piece and 26 full page plates. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front blank "Happy New Year, 1935. Sister Aleta". An unusual work by Aleta B. Baker, "First Master" and founder of the "The Order of the Portal". Largely astrological but also dealing with the concepts of male and female on a spiritual level. "The Order of the Portal," was a small occult group that flourished in Boston in the late 1920s and early 1930s before moving to New York and then disappearing into obscurity. The group's literature suggests that it promoted itself as a "scientific religion" that practiced a synthesis of the teachings of Mme. Blavatsky (Theosophy), Mary Baker Eddy (Christian Science), and Spiritualism, as well as some of its own unusual teachings about the relations of the sexes. In addition to "She: The Woman Man" Aleta B. Baker published a number of books under the imprint of the group, namely "The First Formula," "The Soul's First Student," "The Luminous Doctrine of the Spiritual Heart" and "Man - and his Counterpart - Woman." Very light shelf wear, spine ends end bruised and and bit chafed, top edge and endpapers a little darkened, pages a bit toned but fresh and unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG+ copy in VG dust jacket (Scarce dust jacket is a bit darkened and lightly worn overall. Now in mylar cover). Very scarce. Item #67227
