Witchcraft and Religion. The Politics of Popular Belief.

Oxford / New York: Basil Blackwell, 1987. Reprint. Softcover. Large octavo. xii + 172pp, b&w illustrations, index. A posthumously published work by Christian Larner, a scholar with great knowledge of the history, anthropology and sociology of British and European witchcraft. In this book Dr. Larner argued that the 16th and 17th centuries saw an almost complete identification of church & state; under which "witchcraft" became a usefull scapegoat for most forms of subversion - thus making Witch hunts exercises which unified all levels of society against a common enemy. Just the lightest of shelf rubbing, spine slightly faded -a few pages and back cover lightly creased at upper corner - else a tight clean VG+ copy. Item #67262
