Volume I: The Tao of Painting: xxii +161pp. index; folding plates; Volume II: The Chieh tzu yuan Hua Chuan - xxxvi + 588pp, well illustrated in b&w with some folding, and a few in color. Green cloth with gilt titling to spines, frontispieces, b&w and color illustrations and fold outs, chronology, bibliography, appendix. Includes 4 page printed publisher's prospectus and order form loosely inserted. The first edition of this work described by the publisher as: "An exploration of certain ideas that have traditionally motivated and governed Chinese painting, and the technical methods used to express them." A massive well-illustrated set with just a bit of light shelf wear and aging, light bumps & chafing to corners and spine ends, page edges a bit darkened, owner's name on front blank. Still overall a solid and bright VG+ set, lacking dust jackets but for the printed inner flaps which have been neatly clipped and retained. Books housed in a Good example of the original illustrated slipcase. Slipcase a bit rubbed and worn overall, damp mark to fore-edge of upper panel, slight split to lower front -edge - but still solid and complete.
