Lucifer. A Theosophical Magazine, Designed to "Bring to Light the Hidden Things of Darkness." Volume IX. September 1891- February 1892.

London: Theosophical Publishing Society, 1892. First Edition. Hardcover, Quarto. 528pp. Modern black cloth with gilt lettered spine label, index. Six bound issues of the Theosophical journal "Lucifer," Vol. IX, No. 49 - 54, September 1891- February 1892 inclusive. The present volume was clearly issued as a bound volume rather than being bound up from parts: it has a joint title-page for all six numbers, an Index leaf, and the wrappers are NOT bound in. The first issue of "Lucifer" was published under the editorship of H . P. Blavatsky in September 1887. In 1889 Annie Besant joined her as co-editor, taking over the editorship at Blavatsky's death in May 1891. Besant remained editor with G. R. S. Mead becoming a co-editor in September 1895. It's final, 20th volume was issued in August 1897, at which time it was rechristened "The Theosophical Review." "Lucifer" represented Theosophy in its broadest sense, with essays and articles not only relating to the Society and its aims, but also on other occult, religious, and philosophical subjects, as well as updates on the spread of Theosophy, book reviews, letters, etc. It includes material by Theosophical Society luminaries such as Annie Besant, William Quan Judge, H. P. Blavatsky, William Kingsland, A. P. Sinnet and G.R.S. Mead as well as contributions by others such as two prominent members of the Golden dawn - William Wynn Westcott (who contributes the second part of an essay on the Kabbalah to the September 1891 issue) and J. W. Brodie Innes (who contributes parts 7 & 8 of "The True Church of Christ, Exoteric & Esoteric" to the September & October 1891 issues); and a wide variety of essays including My Unremembered Self - The Experience of An Astral Tramp by Sepharial; The Effects of Indian Hemp, Part I, by Bayard Taylor & Pat. II by H. C. Wood; From a Theosophist's Diary by Algernon Blackwood; etc. etc. Recent cloth binding is in near Fine condition, fresh endpapers. Page edges a bit browned, uneven browning to pages, some scattered browning, light creasing and chipping and short tears to a few page edges, some light damp marks to page edges. Still - overall a tight, clean VG+ copy of a periodical that is scarce in any form. Item #67307
