Lucifer. A Theosophical Magazine, Designed to "Bring to Light the Hidden Things of Darkness." Volume XII. March to August, 1893.

London: Theosophical Publishing Society, 1893. First Edition. Hardcover, Quarto. iv + 616pp (note due to a printing error IN ALL copies - the pagination jumps from page 351 to page 441 thus the actual number of text pages is 526pp). Modern black cloth with gilt lettered spine label, speckled page edges, index. Six bound issues of the Theosophical journal "Lucifer," Vol. XII, March 1893 - August 1893 inclusive. The present volume was clearly issued as a bound volume rather than being bound up from parts: it has a joint title-page for all six numbers, an Index leaf, and the wrappers are NOT bound in. The first issue of "Lucifer" was published under the editorship of H . P. Blavatsky in September 1887. In 1889 Annie Besant joined her as co-editor, taking over the editorship at Blavatsky's death in May 1891. Besant remained editor with G. R. S. Mead becoming a co-editor in September 1895. Its final, 20th volume was issued in August 1897, at which time it was rechristened "The Theosophical Review." "Lucifer" represented Theosophy in its broadest sense, with essays and articles not only relating to the Society and its aims, but also on other occult, religious, and philosophical subjects, as well as updates on the spread of Theosophy, book reviews, letters, etc. It includes material by Theosophical Society luminaries such as Annie Besant, William Quan Judge, H. P. Blavastky, William Kingsland and G.R.S. Mead as well as contributions by others such as prominent member of the Golden dawn William Wynn Westcott (who contributes a two part essay, A Further Glance at the Kabalah); French Spiritism by W. F. Kirby; parts 2 - 5 of The Foundation of Christian Mysticism (according to Master Eckhart) by Franz Hartmann, etc. etc. Recent cloth binding is in near Fine condition, fresh endpapers. Pages lightly toned / browned, but text pages are remarkably fresh and unmarked, overall a tight, clean and unmarked VG+ copy of a periodical that is scarce in any form. Item #67311
