London: "Privately Printed for members of the Dilettanti Society" ND [ circa 1920s ]. Limited Edition. Hardcovers. Large octavos. Two volumes. "A Discourse on the Worship of Priapus": 218pp. "The Worship of the Generative Powers During the Middle Ages of Western Europe": 296pp.; Each quarter black cloth with paper covered boards, gilt titles, etc. to spines, top edges gilt, b&w frontispieces and illustrations. Edition limited to 625 copies of which both these copies are hand-numbered No. 303. Two of the foundation works on phallic worship / phallicism in religion. "A Discourse on the Worship of Priapus" was first published in 1786 and is said to be one of the sources from which modern ideas about talismanic magick and sex-magick practices evolved. Aleister Crowley recommended it to his pupils in the A.'. A.'. as "invaluable to all students." Wright's "The Worship of the Generative Powers" follows on from Payne Knight's work, although perhaps with a greater emphasis on fertility cults, and was originally published alongside the 1865 edition of "The Discourse." Spine ends of both volumes bruised a bit chafed, boards rubbed and unevenly darkened, corners bumped and well chafed as typical with the soft-paper covering of these boards. All edges a little chafed with a few light bumps, pages of "The Discourse" have occasional browning and and foxing, otherwise clean and unmarked. A solid about VG example of this edition, seldom found as a matched set. Item #67353
