A Book of Masonic Rituals etc., Manuscript and Typescript.
NP, ND, (c.1920s). Hardcover. Quarto (10 1/4 x 8 inches). Approx. 330pp. Black patterned leatherette flexible boards with gilt rules to edges. All edges gilt. Decorated endpapers with gilt flourishes to margins. Text in manuscript and typescript. A beautifully prepared book of Masonic ritual. The front endpaper has the neat blind-seal of Lodge Greyfriars (No. 1221), Glasgow "founded 1920." By appearance the book would have been prepared contemporary with the founding, presumably by the Lodge Master. Aside from the first leaf, the text is on the rectos only of 226pp: of these 186pp neatly written in manuscript in blue ink, with red headings and rules, approx. 40pp. are reproduced from a typescript (mimeographed?) in blue, with added red rules. The remaining 104 pages, which are blank, are used to divide the sections. The text gives full details of the ritual initiations in the three degrees of Masonry within the Lodge, together with related material such as the Charges and descriptions of jewels and tools. As there is no truly "Standard" Scottish masonic ritual, it is possible that some of the texts are particular to this lodge. Headings are Opening Prayers (TS); First Degree Opening (TS); First Degree Closing (TS); Ceremony of Initiation (MS); Second Degree Opening (TS); Second Degree Closing (TS); Ceremony of Passing - with subsections Obligation; Investment; S... E... C... R.; Tools; Jewels; Tracing Board; Charge; (MS); Third Degree Opening (TS); Third Degree Closing; Short Method of Passing the Lodge; Short Method of Raising the Lodge; Address to Candidates in Adjacent ...; Affiliates; Honorary Member; Office-Bearer;(TS); Ceremony of Raising. First Part; Obligation; Second Part; Emblems; Investment; Tools; Charge (MS). Spine ends rubbed and lightly worn at foot with a short split to base of lower joint, small scuff mark to rear cover, a few light creasess to covers. End papers a little marked with some splitting at corners of paste-downs without loss, minor spots to a few margins. Still a tight, clean, VG+ interesting record of the basic rituals of Freemasony in early 20th century Scotland. Item #67367
