The Life of Paracelsus. Theophrastus Von Hohenheim 1493-1541.

London: John Murray, 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xvi + 312 pp. Green cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine, gilt hexagram on front cover. Top edge gilt, b/w illustrations. One of the first English-language biographies of Paracelsus (Phillipus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim: 1493 - 1541), who at the time was little known in the English speaking world, other than through the poem by Robert Byron which bore his name. Stoddart, an experienced biographer, developed a great respect for Paracelsus, and sought to overturn the "mendacious calumnies" that occurred in a number of earlier biographical accounts of him. She devoted a number of years of her life to researching the biography, travelling extensively in Germany and Italy to visit places relevant to Paracelsus' life. The book was first published in September 1911, shortly after her death. Cloth a little rubbed and with a couple of tiny tears at the head and tail of spine, points lightly rubbed, a little light shelfwear. Bookplate on front free endpaper, pages lightly toned. Generally a sound, solid and clean better than VG copy (no dust jacket). Item #67403
