Original deep maroon cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine, blind borders to covers, b&w frontisportrait, b/w plates, top page edge red. The second edition, revised with a new Preface, of a work first published in 1911. From the title page: "Being a brief account of the Alchemistic Doctrines, and their relations to mysticism on the one hand, and to recent discoveries in physical science on the other hand; together with some particulars regarding the lives and teachings of the most noted alchemists." The author, H. Stanley Redgrove (1887-1943), was an historian and scholar of alchemy and the occult, and the author of several volumes in the "Rider's 'Mystics and Occultists' series" as well as a number other titles on Magic, Mysticism and Folklore. Cloth a bit darkened and rubbed, corners and spine ends light bumped and chafed, some chipping and minor loss at upper spine, page edges darkened. Small, old, NYC Weiser bookshop sticker on front pastedown, some discoloration to margins of frontispiece, notably at the inner margin where it meets the title-page. Overall a tight and internally clean about VG copy (no dust jacket). Item #67420
