The Secret Doctrine in Israel, A Study of the Zohar and its Connections, with four illustrations.

New York, NY: Occult Research Press, ND [ 1955 ]. Reprint. Hardcover. Octavo. xvi + 330pp. Original brown cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine and front cover, b&w illustrations. Occult Research Press was the first imprint of Samuel Weiser Publishing and is one of the first books published by them in NYC in the 1950s. An exact reprint of the 1914 edition of this important study of the Kabbalah by Arthur Edward Waite (1857 - 1942). Waite was an occultist, mystic, and prolific author. A member of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia, and the Theosophical Society, he joined the Order of the Golden dawn in 1891 and remained in it for over a dozen years before leaving and forming his Fellowship of the Rosy Cross. Aleister Crowley loved to make fun of him in Reviews in his Equinox series, although in a candid moment he wrote 'If it had not been for Waite I doubt if, humanly speaking, I should ever have got in touch with the Great Order.' Writing about Waite's studies of the Kabalah, Golden Dawn scholar R. A. Gilbert observed: 'No other work in English approaches Waite's study in sanity, accuracy or competence, despite the errors due to his reliance on unsatisfactory translations. His insight into Kabbalism is praised by Gershom Scholem, the greatest living authority on the subject ... " Just a hint of light shelf wear and bruising to points, a few faint spots to upper board, pages lightly toned, old NYC Weiser book shop label on front pastedown, a few creased page corners. Still a tight, bright VG+ copy (no dust jacket). Item #67448
