The Tomb of Ramesses VI Texts and Plates Bollingen Series XL. Vol. 1. Egyptian Religious Texts and Representations. ( 2 Volumes in slipcase ).

New York, NY: Pantheon Books, 1954. First Edition. Hardcovers. Large Quartos (approx. 12.5 x 9.5 inches). One "volume" in two parts: separate text volume and clamshell plate "volume", both housed in a brown cloth slip-case with paper title-label. Both the text volume and tne clamshell case are bound in matching two toned beige/brown cloth with gilt titling to spine and device to front covers. Part 1 (Text): xx + 460 pp, colour frontispiec and illustrations, numerous fold-out plates, diagrams. Part 2 (Plates): comprises a 16pp booklet in printed brown wrappers (a list of the plates) and 196 loose plates. The first volume, in two parts (complete within itself), of the "Egyptian Religious Texts and Representations" (Bollingen Series XL). From the editorial note: "'Egyptian Religious Texts and Representations' comprises a series of publications on Egyptian religion which include the complete photographic recording of hitherto unpublished royal tombs, important mythological papyri, and miscellaneous cosmological texts and symbolical representations. The series includes, where possible, the full translation of texts." This set (Vol.I) is devoted to the tomb of Ramesses VI, at Thebes, and is in two parts: a volume containing, in translation, and reconstructed in so far as possible, the texts inscribed on the walls and ceilings of the tomb, together with reconstructed diagrams of the representations, certain text collations, and additional plates of variants from other tombs; and a portfolio of collotype plates constituting a complete photographic recording of the tomb. The plates are looseleaf, so that they may be studied in sequence along with the texts and diagrams. The study is based on the work of an expedition sponsored by the Bollingen Foundation during the period from October, 1949, to June, 1951. Both parts, text and plates, are in Near-Fine condition. As always two roughly one inch squares have been cut from the upper spine of each of the otherwise plain brown paper protective jackets so that the titles on the spine can be read, and there is a just a touch of fading to the exposed cloth surface. The spine of the "jackets" are a little faded, and have a few small spots (almost as though from a distant tea splash), and a little chipping at the heads and tails of the spine. So books are are near-Fine and jackets VG +. The cloth-bound slip-case shows some light fading in places and is bit rubbed at edges but is still solid and attractive (the title label has one tiny mark, but is otherwise near-Fine). A large heavy set that will require additional shipping to that which is automatically quoted. Item #67524
