Khing Kang King: The Classic of Purity. Liber XXI.

King's Beach, CA: Thelema Publications, 1974. Deluxe Issue: Second Thelema Publications Edition. Hardcover. Small square octavo. 6 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. 22pp (printed only on recto side of page). Quarter blue morocco over matching marbled paper covered boards, gilt title and author to spine. Text printed in blue. A rare (unique?) specially bound edition of the 1974 Thelema publications edition of Crowley's "Khing Kang King." It was purchased direct from the publisher, Helen Parsons Smith, by Clive Harper, in August 1990. In correspondence she described it as a "deluxe edition," which it obviously is, as the regular edition was bound in cloth, but no other detail was given. Internally it is identical to the un-numbered 1974 issue of the volume. Crowley originally published "Liber XXI" in an edition of 100 copies (of which arguably less than a quarter were distributed) in 1939. The book was first reissued by Helen Parsons Smith (1910 - 2003), ex-wife of Jack Parsons, widow of W. T. Smith, and long time member of Agape Lodge of the O.T.O., under her Thelema publications imprint in 1973. In 1974 she brought out a new reset edition which included a reproduction of a previously unpublished drawing that Crowley had done on a blank in one of the first editions. There were two main issues of this new edition, one of which had a limitation notice stating that it was limited to 100 numbered copies, and the other un-numbered and without that notice. Precedence of issue is not known, although it seems likely that the numbered issues preceded the unnumbered issue. This deluxe volume comprises a set of sheets from the unumbered issue, specially bound as described. It may well be unique - we have certainly never seen another copy. As a car-dealer might say: "one careful owner since new" - having come directly from the collection of Clive Harper. With his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Very faint rubbing to corners - else a bright Fine copy. No dustjacket issued. Item #67671
