Item #67835 Magic: Its Ritual, Power and Purpose. W. E. BUTLER.

Magic: Its Ritual, Power and Purpose.

London: Aquarian Press, 1958. Second Edition. Softcover. Small octavo. 76pp + adverts. Original red wrappers lettered and illustrated in white, plain white spine, bibliography. From the publisher: "A remarkably concise explanation of the ancient uses, ritual and true aims of Magic." By Walter Ernest Butler (1898-1978), a priest in the Liberal Catholic Church, who studied with Dion Fortune and was active in her Fraternity of the Inner Light for nearly twenty years. In later life he became acquainted with Gareth Knight and eventually went on to found his own group, the Servants of the Light, of which he remained the main teacher until not long before his death, at which time the mantle was passed to Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki. This book was quite popular and after its first edition (1952) of 2000 copies this second edition (1958) of 3,000 copies was released. Despite the relatively large print runs, it was a relatively fragile publication, and early editions are now somewhat scarce. Very light shelf wear and chafing to edges and upper spine, Aquarian Book Service ink stamp on front blank, pages lightly toned, else a tight unmarked VG+ copy. Item #67835
